Preventing, Detecting & Killing Bed Bugs
We Offer Bed Bug Equipment Rentals and More
Bed bugs are nocturnal creatures that feed on human blood while we sleep. They sense the presence of humans by their body heat and carbon dioxide levels which increase when we are asleep. Bed bugs can survive for weeks without meals and one feed takes only 10-15 minutes. Thus, bed bugs hitchhiking on luggage and clothing stay put for days or weeks till they sense a host, crawl out of the closets across the floor and up the leg of your bed in order to bite you. This is perhaps the best time to trap them.
Bed bug traps come in various types. Some traps attract the bed bugs by emitting CO2 patterns similar to human respiration and trap them in a polished tray. These low cost easy to install traps give off early warning if a bed bug infestation is detected and also even prevent fresh infestations.
Mattress encasements are another helpful tool for getting rid of bed bugs. The bugs are sealed within the encasements which they cannot escape from nor bite into and eventually they die of starvation. They are most efficient when placed after a bed bug treatment so that bed bugs that are not killed stay within the encasement and stop them from spreading.
Treating the room and objects with heat is another effective alternative. In this method, the temperature is increased to more than 50 degrees and maintained so for a couple of hours. The bed bugs are not able to survive the high temperature and even the eggs are rendered dead after the exposure. Heat treatment is considered the best means of getting rid of bed bugs as the bugs are not able to escape into their hiding holes.
